Havana anniversaries. April 8th.

1968.   The outstanding Cuban painter Amelia Peláez del Casal dies in Havana.

Born in the town of Yaguajay, in the then province of Las Villas, on January 5, 1897, through her work she created a fascinating multicolored world. Her prestige surpassed the national frameworks since she was an artist who triumphed in other parts of the world. Her very personal style is not only present in her pictorial work, but also in her ceramic works. The mural paintings were another of her facets in her art.

For his relevant work he received multiple awards and distinctions.

 

1987.   The outstanding writer Manuel Cofiño López dies in Havana.

He was born in the Cuban capital on February 16, 1936. He became one of the most widely read Cuban writers and was translated into other languages. Many of his stories have the name of a woman as a title and also several of his novels are directly related to themes associated with women.

On one occasion, when referring to the motivations he felt as a writer, he stated that literature should be at the service of man, his aspirations, his dreams and struggles.

He was a leader of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba. He served as vice-president of the Literature Section of that organization. For his meritorious work he was awarded several decorations by the Cuban state and other countries, among them, the Distinction for National Culture and the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Simón Bolívar University of Colombia.
