Havana Celebrates World Health Day

With the slogan "Our planet, our health", the World Health Day is celebrated this April 7 in Havana with multiple activities from the capital's Great Metropolitan Park, precisely from this natural environment because this year the main objective of the celebration is to reflect on the effects of the climate crisis on mankind.

Radio Coco reports that Ms. Yusmila Hernández Castillo, specialist of the Department of Health Promotion and Education of the Provincial Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology of the capital, explained that the day will include sports activities, science and contests on various topics.

Cuba's Ministry of Public Health in a tweet indicates that this year's commemoration is dedicated to the interconnection between the health of the planet and human beings, while promoting a movement to create societies focused on wellbeing.

For her part, Ileana Morales, national director of Science and Technological Innovation of the Ministry of Public Health, in statements to Prensa, Latina affirmed that Cuba has government programs that address the issue with a focus on prevention and risk minimization.

As an example of these programs, she mentioned Tarea Vida, a state plan to confront climate change, which includes health among its components.

According to Morales, the health actions included in this strategy focus on 12 fundamental areas, including environmental health, epidemiology, vector control, science and technological innovation, and medical education.

Among the main problems to be countered in the country, PL reports, are soil degradation, loss of biological diversity, damage to forest cover, noise, and actions to reverse the deterioration of sanitary and hygienic conditions in human settlements.

World Health Day commemorates the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948.
