Havana anniversaries. April 7.

1849.   Luis Montané Dardé is born in Havana.

As a child, he moved with his family to France where he studied to become a Doctor of Medicine. On his return to Cuba, in 1874, he entered the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana. He also held the positions of Vice-President of the Society of Clinical Studies of Havana, and Director of the Anthropological Section of the Felipe Poey Cuban Society of Natural History.  He spent most of his life as a professor at the University of Havana. There he created in 1900 the first Chair of Anthropology, and founded the Laboratory and the Anthropological Museum.

He died in Chatou, France, on November 28, 1936.

 

1985.    René Portocarrero dies in Havana.

He was also born in the Cuban capital, in the Cerro neighborhood, on February 24, 1912. From an early age he showed his vocation for painting. He considered that art requires the discipline of a soldier and the devotion of a priesthood. With the wisdom of a poet of the brush he reflected in his works the Cuban exuberance.  In 1934 he made his first personal exhibition and from then on and for several decades his work would reflect the light, the color and the rhythm of Cuba.

He did not limit himself only to the creation of paintings, as he also illustrated books and magazines, made graphic designs and the traces of his work as a muralist are present in different places in Cuba.
