Havana anniversaries. April 3rd.

1874.   Eduardo Sánchez de Fuentes is born in Havana.

He was the creator of operettas, zarzuelas, operas and songs. He is particularly remembered for his creation of the habanera "TU", which achieved international fame. This work is considered the habanera par excellence. In that creation he defined Cuba as the beautiful island of the burning sun and also made reference to the palm tree that gently sways in the forest. In addition to his work as a composer, he was also a critic. He published some important works, among them, one related to folklore in Cuban music. He also gave numerous lectures, among which were those associated with the influence of Cuban rhythms in our songbook and the tendencies of sonero art.

 He died in Havana on September 7, 1944.

 

2008. Norberto Abilio Collado Abreu died in Havana.

Born in the town of Surgidero de Batabanó on February 23, 1921, at an early age, due to his family's economic situation, he was forced to work at sea. Years later, due to his revolutionary activities, he was repressed and had to emigrate.  Due to his long experience as a sailor, he was selected as the helmsman of the Granma yacht that led Fidel Castro with 81 other expeditionaries in 1956 to begin the armed struggle in the eastern mountains against the dictator Fulgencio Batista.

After the triumph of the Revolution he joined the Revolutionary War Navy occupying various responsibilities. In 1976 he was appointed to take care of the Granma yacht, in charge of the Granma Memorial at the Museum of the Revolution.

In 2002 he was declared Illustrious Son of the City of Batabanó.
