Havana Anniversaries.  March 31st.

 

2000.  Dr. Julio Martínez Páez dies in Havana.

He was born in the town of Bolondrón, in the province of Matanzas, on January 15, 1908.

Considered the Father of Orthopedics in Cuba, he developed and contributed his knowledge and experience to Orthopedics and Traumatology. He wrote the first textbook of that subject, among his many scientific works and publications. He participated in numerous combat actions during the liberation war in the Sierra Maestra and was also in charge of the Military Health Services of the Rebel Army. For his work he was conferred the rank of Commander.

 

2015.   Héctor Pérez Ramírez dies in Havana.

He was born in the town of San Antonio de Cabezas, in the province of Matanzas.

He started in radio in 1957, where he was able to work with prominent figures for five decades. In 1990, he worked in Radio Progreso in the programs "Reto a la imaginación" (Challenge to the imagination), and later directed "Huellas", "La gran aventura de la humanidad", "La novela de las dos", "Así se forjó la Patria" and "Fiesta Guajira", as well as other programs and special series of historical character. He transmitted his knowledge and experience as a teacher to several generations of writers and broadcasting directors.

For his valuable contribution to the development of Radio and Television he received several awards, among them: the Raúl Gómez García Distinction, the Distinction for National Culture, the Diploma for Artistic Merit awarded by the Higher Institute of Art, for relevant contributions to Cuban Radio and National Culture and the Artist of Merit Status from the ICRT.
