Havana anniversaries. March 23rd

1843.  Luis Victoriano Betancourt is born in Havana.

He was a lawyer, poet, journalist and writer. He joined the war for the independence of Cuba that began in 1868 together with a large group of young men who were part of the expedition of the schooner Galvanic led by Manuel de Quesada. At the beginning of 1869 he occupied the presidency of the Martial Court of Camagüey. Together with other western deputies, he ratified the text of the Guáimaro Constitution. After the end of the war he worked as a lawyer, professor and journalist.

His death occurred in Havana on June 8, 1885.

 

1906.  Patriot Julio Sanguily Garrite dies in Havana.

He was born in the Cuban capital on November 9, 1845.

As a member of the Liberation Army he actively participated in different confrontations with the Spanish forces. In 1870, in San Fernando de Pacheco, accompanied only by 15 horsemen, he attacked a column of about 250 men of infantry and cavalry. In that encounter his left foot was destroyed with a rifle shot. From that moment on, because of his disability, he had to be mounted and dismounted from his horse in every combat.  Shortly after, he was appointed Chief of Operations of the southern district of Camagüey.
