Havana Anniversaries. March 5th

1933.   The outstanding journalist and independence fighter Juan Gualberto Gómez dies in Havana.
His birth took place on July 12, 1854 in the province of Matanzas. Throughout his existence he developed a fruitful work in the field of journalism in favor of the independence of Cuba and in the determined fight for the racial equality of the Cubans. He maintained a close relationship with José Martí in the organization of the resumption of the independence struggle. For his political convictions he suffered jail and exile on several occasions.  In the final stage of his life he maintained a dignified position and opposed the dictatorial regime of Gerardo Machado.

1960.  In a ceremony held at 23rd and 12th streets in Havana's Vedado, very close to the entrance of the Colon Cemetery, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro proclaims the slogan "Homeland or Death" while speaking at the mournful farewell to the victims of the sabotage of the French steamship La Coubre.  Throughout time the slogan "Fatherland or Death" has also reflected the decision of our people to defy all dangers and threats, as well as the solidity of the defense of the Revolution.
