Havana anniversaries . February 23rd

1909. Enrique de la Osa was born in the town of Alquizar, once province of  La Habana.

He studied in local schools and then started in the Instituto de La Habana.He did not go to the University but had a vast cultural autodidactic knowledge. 

He founded the section "En Cuba” (In Cuba) in the magazine Bohemia on July 4th, 1943 which was an outstanding one due to its quality and courage in turrent national facts.

He was a professor in the Professional School of Journalism Manuel Márquez Sterling (Escuela Profesional de Periodismo Manuel Márquez Sterling) from 1960 to 1971. Likewise, he was the director of the newspaper Revolución and of the magazine Bohemia.

He was awarded, the National Award for Journalism, José Martí (Premio Nacional de Periodismo José Martí) given by the Unión de Periodistas de Cuba in 1992.

 

1987.   Cipriano Justino Isidrón Torres dies in La Habana.

He was born in Calabazar de Sagua on September 26th, 1903.

He was artistically known as Chanito Isidrón and was a famous figure for the traditional popular culture. He was an outstanding poet and a countryside trovaduer who made the phrase: ¡Esto es Cuba, Chanito! very famous.

He was considered the Elegante poeta (Elegant poet) of Las Villas.

He was a wild poet, humorist, critic of the cuban social reality before the Revolution and did that through the lyrics of the décimas he created for the radio program La Guantanamera in which tragic facts from the Cuban reality occurring in the country were dramatized.

He was a popular singer, not only as the voice for the countryside people but also of the nation as such.
