Miguel Barnet was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Letters by the University of Havana.

The poet, storyteller, essayist and ethnologist Miguel Barnet received this Wednesday at the University of Havana the Doctor Honoris Causa degree in Letters granted by the University of Havana.

The Doctor of Sciences, also President of the Fernando Ortiz Foundation and Honorary President of the Union of Artists and Writers of Cuba, was praised by the rector of the institution, Miriam Nicado, who referred to the dedication to the homeland and writing imprint of the poet, author of memorable works such as Biografía de un cimarrón and Gallego.

On the other hand, José Antonio Baujín, vice rector of the University of Havana, described the magnetizing power of Barnet's work, his impressive international recognition and the deep anti-colonial feeling, insular conscience and identity commitment of his creations: "Cuba presides over Barnet's thematic obsessions," he said.

The Honoris Causa is a more than deserved recognition for who is already a bastion of Cuban culture.
