Family Code in popular consultation includes transnational character of families in Cuba.

The law project of the Family Code, in popular consultation till April 30th, includes as novelty the transnational dimension of this population group, pointed out today a diplomatic source.

According to the general director of Consular Affairs and Cubans Residents Abroad in the chancellery, Ernesto Soberón, the inclusion of this category in the document commenced from the development of migratory policies in the Caribbean island that encourages citizens´ migration.

In a press conference, the functionary stressed the increasing presence of Cubans in other countries, who might offer their approval, disagreement or modification proposals to the law through the web site www.nacionyemigracion.cu.

He pointed out that since 2013, moment when the deepest update of the migratory law was made and to the date, 5.7 million people have travelled abroad in the island.

He also said that, since that date, 1.3 million people travelled out of Cuba while 3.5 million Cuban residents abroad traveled to the island, an increasing tendency that has suffered the strike of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Either way, Soberón referred to the escalation in the connectivity and communication among members in family nuclei even though they have different places of residency.

The contribution of the fellow- citizens will help to the collective creation of a Family Code that seeks unity, respect for human dignity, equality of all the members in the family and the protection of the most vulnerable.

After the consultation of the new Family Code project, the Cuban Parliament should approve a new version, which will face a popular referendum.
