Havana anniversaries. February 15th.

1832.   Nicolás Ruiz Espadero is born in Havana.

Throughout his life he stood out as a composer and pianist. He was considered the most important romantic performer of Cuban music of his time. His works were performed in Cuba and abroad and he participated in all activities that had to do with the promotion of music, especially in the classical music sections.  As a composer he was deeply imbued with the tradition of the virtuosos of nineteenth century Europe.

He died in the Cuban capital on August 30, 1890.

1957.  At Radio Cadena Habana a group of musicians led by Carlos Faxas, pianist, composer, arranger and director of vocal and orchestral groups, clandestinely recorded the July 26th March, composed by Agustín Díaz Cartaya, who held Faxas' in high esteem. After the revolutionary triumph Cartaya said about those who made the recording of the march he composed: "They gave an example of commitment with the best weapons they had, art".
