Havana anniversaries. February 10.

 

1963.   Enrique Loynaz del Castillo dies in Havana.

He was born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, on June 5, 1871. His parents were Cuban and resided in the house destined to the revolutionary delegation in that city.  He was Chief of Staff of the first division of the province of Las Villas commanded by General Serafín Sánchez.  He attended as a representative to the Constituent Assembly of Jimaguayú.  He drafted the declaration of independence contained in the Constitution approved there.  He was part of the invading column led by Antonio Maceo. Precisely, he served as assistant to the brave independence fighter. He participated in more than 60 combat actions. He reached the rank of Brigadier General during the war for independence resumed in 1895. He was the author of the lyrics of the Invader Hymn. 

 

2012.   Inocente Iznaga dies in Havana.

He was born on December 28, 1930, in the area of Arimao, near the city of Cienfuegos. From the age of seven he began to sing guajiras, guarachas, sones and Cuban décimas. Known in the musical world as the Goldfinch of Cienfuegos, his voice made popular several musical creations, among them, one dedicated to the caldosa, that famous food that emerged in the eastern Cuban province of Las Tunas by the initiative of the inhabitants of that city known as Kike and Marina.

During his long and fruitful career he was awarded on several occasions and among other recognitions he received the Distinction for National Culture.
