Havana anniversaries. February 7th

2009.  The singer Caridad Hierrezuelo dies in Havana. She was born in the city of Santiago de Cuba in 1924.She achieved great popularity in the Cuban musical world. She became known as La Guarachera de Oriente, thanks to her personal version of the song "Guarapo, pimienta y sal", among other songs that reached great popularity. The author of this melody was her brother Reinaldo Hierrezuelo. She performed in stellar radio and television programs, as well as in the most important nightclubs and theaters of the country.

In recognition of his artistic career he received the Distinction for National Culture.

 

2011.  Actress and singer María de los Ángeles Santana Soravilla died in Havana.

She was born in the Cuban capital on August 2, 1914. She began in 1933 as an actress in the cinema and participated in numerous American, Mexican and Argentine films, some in co-production with Cuba. For several decades she reaped several successes in her presentations in the theater, as well as achieved great popularity among the people for having embodied characters of great notoriety in television programs. She had a long and fruitful existence and became a singular Cuban artist, who triumphed in radio, television, theater, cinema and shows.

In 2001, the Cuban Ministry of Culture awarded her the National Theater Award. She also received other awards, prizes and official recognitions from various cultural institutions for her long, intense and meritorious artistic career.
