Energy-efficient building activation progresses in Havana

Speaking exclusively to the Cuban News Agency, Norge Hernández Castro, director of the project, highlighted the future applicability of the initiative financed by the European Union, within the framework of Euroclima plus, and its repercussion in other sectors of the economy when it comes to generating an energy-efficient medium-sized building model in Cuba.
He underscored the importance of the project, which fosters culture and innovative thinking.
As part of the actions to convert the CEDAI building, located on Avenida de los Presidentes (G), into an efficient facility, he pointed out that this month the photovoltaic systems will be put into operation, after finishing the assembly works.
The engineer commented that the building's energy matrix will be modified by generating approximately 32 percent of the electricity demand from renewable sources, being able to offset part of the facility's consumption and cover the annual demand of electric vehicles.
The arrival of these vehicles is expected for the first quarter of 2022, which will be incorporated into the company's vehicle fleet and whose replacement will reduce the consumption of fossil fuels by an estimated 18 tons per year.
He said that the civil and electrical works of the electric vehicle charging section are almost completed, with an integrated management system that will allow monitoring and verification of their parameters.
Hernández Castro said that progress was slow in 2021 due to the pandemic, which threatened the arrival of the main resources to the country due to the impact on the logistics chains worldwide.
The 3XE initiative has trained almost 190 specialists, many of them women, on issues related to energy efficiency and renewable energy sources in medium-sized buildings.
Another result is the refurbishment of the Ernesto Che Guevara Pioneer Central Palace, where children will be taught knowledge related to these subjects through scientific and technical activities.
Financed by the European Union and with the support of the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID), the solution foresees the transformation of the systems at CEDAI's headquarters through the application of measures that contribute to the reduction of fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases.
