Havanna anniversaries. February 2nd

1880. Doctor Carlos Juan Finlay Barrés proposes the creation of a commision to study the yellow fever, it was done during a session of the Society for Clinical Studies of Havana

His best contribution to science in the world is related to the theory of the intermediary agent in the transmission of infectious diseases. That allowed him to discover the way of spreading and control of the yellow fever, the most terrible epidemiological issue in Cuba in the second half of the nineteen century  

 

1969.   The painter Víctor Manuel García dies in Havana.

He was born in the Cuban capital on October 31st , 1897.

He had his first link with painting by chance, being a child.

He was the creator of one of the most famous paintings in Cuba, at the first half of the XX century, 1929. He identified the painting as the “Gitana Tropical”. He made a tour in several European countries and lived in Paris, capital of France  for some time, after that, later he returned to his homeland. He lived on his paintings without concessions and was remarkable for being a simple and spontaneous painter.  

He used to walk around the area of Habana Vieja with his paintbrushes in a paper bag.

Having no place to perform, sidewalks were his workplace and each sample of his work is a sort of open assembly.
