Code of the families, a project of love and justice in Cuba.

During a meeting to analyze the regulation in her constituency, the 82-year-old woman considered that the proposal is relevant taking into account the context, the contemporary family problems and for the defense of people´s rights.

In the current conditions, we have to change, she asserted while acknowledging that latent challenges regarding the full understanding of the Code.

The neighbor of the area, Elio Fidel López, pointed out that the project is a very progressive ordinance, and that if approved, the country would be in the vanguard in the treatment of several subjects.

He explained that, precisely because of its advanced nature, it may contradict traditions and prejudices in the society, but the regulation does not take away anyone´s rights, but rather provides them and comes to protect the most vulnerable, he emphasized.

In this regard, he praised the prospect of providing more guarantees to the elderly, an important approach taking into account the aging population in the country, he said.

The Code becomes a text that should be approved by all, remarked Lopez.

The voter Olga Morales mentioned that she learned about the contents of the document through the media, and stated that she agreed with the courageous changes that the Code proposes and its most difficult issues reflected in it.

Other reflections during the popular consultation meant the need to engage young people in the discussion of this bill, which, they emphasized, constitutes a reflection of each family, favors emotional bonds, and its against discrimination and manifestation of violence.

Those presents described the consultation moreover as an exercise of democracy, and called to be part of it.

According to experts, the Code of Families proposes a greater inclusion, not only of people diverse due to their sexual orientation, but also different due to their age, the exercise of the capacities and plurality, as well as the recognition of multi-parenting and socio-affective relations.

The text was previously subjected to debate in the parliament and to a consultation with specialists in the legal field and the agencies of the Central Administration of the State.

In the current debate, until next April 30, in about 78 000 discussion spots, citizens in and out of Cuba will be able to offer their approval, disagreement or make modification proposals to the draft of the law.

Once the analysis have been  completed, the National Assembly should approve a new version that will go to the people´s referendum .
