Havana anniversaries. January 31st.

1857. The newspaper Correo de la Tarde began to circulate.

Its contents reflected topics of education, politics, science and news about Cuba and Spain. It also published the artistic performances that were offered at that time. In addition, its pages featured articles on literature, novels and costumbrist stories.

Among its permanent collaborators were Ramón Vélez, Fernando Valdés Aguirre, Antonio Sellén and Francisco Paula y Gelabert.

 

1880. Ramiro Guerra is born in the town of Batabanó, then province of Havana.

In the course of his life he excelled as a great pedagogue and economist.

Between 1896 and 1898 he collaborated with the cause of Cuban independence. Subsequently, he held various positions in different educational organizations and institutions.

He became the general superintendent of schools in Cuba and in that sense he reformed the course plans of the schools and also organized the first School of Commerce in Havana.

He also published several books and represented Cuba before different organizations.

He died in Havana on October 29, 1970.
