Havana Anniversaries. January 30.

1920. José Antonio Tenreiro Gómez is born in Havana.

He became known in the music world as Tito Gómez.

He began his contact with music at the early age of twelve, in a competitive contest at the National Theater where he interpreted the musical creation entitled, Lamento Gitano, Rosa La China y Granada y María la O by Ernesto Lecuona.

A month later he performed again on the stage of the National Theater and sang "Rosa la China", also by Lecuona and again won the applause of the audience.

He was a great singer and was considered one of the greatest improvisers in Cuba. He was a member of prestigious orchestras such as the Riverside Orchestra and the Enrique Jorrín Orchestra.

His great success was the song Vereda Tropical, which he recorded for the first time in 1950. With this song he began his career as a singer.

 

1990. The National Botanical Garden of Havana was declared a National Monument.

It has about 600 hectares. Around four thousand species are cultivated there, identified in more than 145 thousand planted specimens. This is one of the largest gardens in the world and occupies an important place in the list of tropical gardens. There are more than 500 species of orchids, more than a thousand cacti and about 620 species of araceae, begonias, ferns, curujeyes and other shade plants.
