Havana anniversaries. January 28th.

1853. José Martí is born in Paula Street, Havana.

Classified as Our National Hero for his direct contribution to the independence cause, he was also a man who stood out for his great contributions in the field of culture.

Martí wrote books of verses, a novel and several plays and also developed a relevant work as a journalist.

Martí also wrote works in which he made judgments about plastic arts exhibitions, literary works, as well as presentations of musicians and he valued the scope of the work carried out by artists and writers of recognized prestige.

His fall in combat took place in the area of Dos Ríos, in Jiguaní, in the then province of Oriente, on May 19, 1895.

 

1891.   The outstanding Cuban scientist Felipe Poey Aloy dies in Havana. 

He was born in Havana on May 26, 1799.

He was one of the founders of the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana. As a naturalist, he became a member of the Commission of Natural Sciences. Promoter of the scientific and literary culture, he dedicated a good part of his literary, linguistic, artistic and historical work to the Havana High Schools.

He collaborated as a scientific disseminator with his own translations and articles in the main newspapers and magazines of his time, such as: "La Honesta Cubana", the "Faro Industrial de La Habana" and "La Piragua".
