Cuban President acknowledges environmental projects from Enrique José Varona University.

The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz Canel Bermúdez, evaluated the AGROCEL Project, belonging to the University of Pedagogical Sciences as interesting and integral and the outcomes provided by the Environmental Studies Center-GEA, from the Enrique José Varona Pedagogical Sciences University(UCPEJV).

The project for local development AGROCEL was presented as part of the regular meetings that the President holds with teachers, researchers and directives of the High Studies Center, executed by the academic entity and factors of the municipality of Marianao.

Liván Cepero Martínez, PhD in Sciences and head of AGROCEL, explained that the initiative take as scenery the forest areas of Ciudad Escolar Libertad, for the seed of various crops under the aim of supplying the university´s dinning services while supporting natural medicine manufacturing at MediLab Pharmaceutical Laboratory, which holds a drug dispensary that constitutes the main strength and starting point for the starting project.

Cepero Martínez explained that the MediLab Natural and Traditional Medicine Laboratory, which tributes its profits to the UCPEJV, has been limited in several occasions due to the lack of plant raw material.

Reason that led us to propose a project of local development that took advantages of Ciudad Escolar Libertad´s areas in order to produce those medicinal plants, that due to soil and weather conditions could be grown and be necessary for the proposed production of the lab, the pharmaceutical dispensary as well as other double-purpose varieties: medicinal and as seasoning.

AGROCEL Project includes different actions to be developed in the perimeter to look for financing as the creation of a Gardening and Urban Agriculture School destined to young people with diminished intellectual capacities, the application of forestry, agroforestry and agro-ecological trail, the creation of an aquatic plants pond, lumbar, a Botanical Garden and areas for students and young people´s activities.

After analyzing, this Wednesday morning, the proposition made by AGROCEL, Diaz Canel showed a deep interest on knowing the amount of people involved in the project, about the possibility of making a MES responsible for its management, confirming that the project owns a solid base that can be linked to the technologic park that is being built at the Enrique José Varona Pedagogical Sciences University in Ciudad Escolar Libertad.

¨It is a great project-claimed the President-which firstly, rescues an area and then, improves it, aesthetically speaking, and it also engages young people in the activity.  It is an integral, productive and educational project that provides orientation to young people with disabilities¨.

Likewise, in a second part of the meeting, hosted at Palacio de la Revolución, Dr. Rafael Bosque Suárez, head of the Environmental Studies Center-GEA, exposed the results of the management , which are visualized at the Natural History School Museum with an Environmental Cabinet, an Education Chair in Energy, an Specialized Classroom, an Alejandro de Humboldt Honorific Chair and an ecological classroom in construction, which is a response to the mission under which GEA Project was created in 1995, becoming a Studies Center in 2012.

¨The mission of the center is to assure the institutional capacity for the development of an environmental and energetic education at UCPEJV and from the research we work in three key areas: professional improvement, curricula updating and environmental programs and projects¨.

The Studies Center, linked to the biggest Pedagogical University of its kind in the country, also endorses post-graduation formation, develop communicative actions and set agreements and networks for consulting and events development.

Dr. Rafael Bosque Suárez made a pause to highlight the work carried out together with Cubasolar. ¨We have currently a project that has been limited due to the pandemic, consistent in the placement of solar panels in the rectorate´s roof that will feed the central node, areas of the rectorate and the Studies Center itself, so we do not have only educational aims but also back up plans for supplying energy to the University.

In an exchange with the Principal, the Chief of the State encouraged to make the faculties embraced in the campus working I a single network with the different pedagogical faculties in the country and to stablish bounds with new economic factors.

There is a group of agricultural and non- agricultural cooperatives that are actually heading tours an environmental responsibility and we keep endorsing that our business responsibility must act in coherence with the environment¨.

To the meeting attended: Jorge Luis Broche, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba Secretariat, Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Iella, Deputy Minister, Ena Elsa Velázquez Cobiella and José Ramon Saborido Loidi, Ministers of Education and High Education, respectively. The President of the Republic stated that the AGROCEL Project and the Environmental Studies Center are interesting and integrals and both of the contribute to stablishing an environmental culture which is indispensable in a world which its main need if to keep safe itself.
