Havana anniversaries. January 26.

1989. Luis Orlando Rodríguez Rodríguez dies in Havana.

In his political work he opposed the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado and was leader of the youth of the Authentic Party. Later he was among the founders of the Cuban People's Party (Orthodox) and after the coup d'état in 1952 he fought against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. Later he joined the Rebel Army in the Sierra Maestra where he reached the rank of Commander. There he directed the Radio Rebelde radio station that kept the people informed of the actions of the revolutionary combatants.

 

2007.    Dancer and choreographer Josefina Méndez dies in Havana.

Her elegant and majestic stage presence, her mastery of the great romantic-classical tradition, her ease in modern roles, led her to be a guest artist in various companies around the world. A dancer with a wide range of range, she was also an accomplished stylist. Her dance discovered to the world a new and complete school of ballet, the Cuban one. She was the owner of an absolute elegance, of an irreproachable technique and of a dramatic talent, and for all this she earned the affection and recognition of the Cuban people as well as of many men and women in different parts of the world.
