Havana anniversaries. January 25.

1898. The American ship El Maine arrives in Havana.

Its arrival was on the pretext of a friendly visit. At that time, relations between the United States and Spain were strained. Its presence was just one more in the chain of pressures that the U.S. government had been exerting on the Spanish government.  The Maine was perhaps the largest warship that had ever entered the port of Havana. Its appearance, anchored in the center of the bay, was imposing. Her crew consisted of 26 officers and 328 enlisted men.

At 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 1898, an explosion sank the U.S. battleship Maine. Three-quarters of the crew perished in the incident.

1940. Manuel Aguiar García (Manolito Aguiar) is born in Marianao, Havana.

He studies at the Secondary School of Marianao and there he manifests his opposition to the Batista dictatorship and his human conditions lead him to become president of the Students' Association.

He put his short life at all times at the service of his ideals. Immersed in the revolutionary struggles against the prevailing system, death surprised him at dusk on November 1, 1958 when, together with other young comrades, he was preparing to denounce the electoral farce to extend Fulgencio Batista's regime.
