Napoleonic Museum reaches its 60th anniversary

The director of the Napoleonic Museum of Havana, Sadys Sánchez, described the 60th anniversary of the founding of this cultural precinct of the Office of the Historian of Havana as a very special, imperial Napoleonic day.

The commemoration ceremony was attended by its first director, Cuban writer, ethnologist and painter Natalia Bolívar, who expressed the audience the origins and formation of the collections, as well as her close personal ties with Julio Lobo, who for years collected objects, manuscripts and correspondence of Napoleon.

Referring to Lobo, Sánchez said: ¨We still remember and honor him. ¨She also pointed out that this was one of the museums created by the government after the Revolutionary Triumph on January 1959, and invited those present to visit the small exhibition Napoleon in Santa Elena and to enjoy the presentation of the group Ars Longa, who performed madrigals and dances.

The Napoleonic Museum of Havana, inaugurated on December 1st, 1961, is an institution specialized in Imperial Art, catalogued as one of the five most important in the world and the only of its kind in Cuba.

The precinct is located in a manner built in the decade of the 20s of the last century, and treasures more than 7400 pieces belonging to Bonaparte or related to its historical context. It includes paintings, engravings, sculptures, stylish furniture, costumes, military equipment and armaments, decorative arts, historical objects and an extraordinary collection of rare and highly valuable books on French, English and Spanish.
