Exhibition of Women Filmmakers closes in Havana, Cuba

Exhibition of Women Filmmakers, organized by the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industries (Icaic), ended its sessions today within the framework of the day for non-violence against women.

With the key support of the still young Icaic Gender Committee, the space allowed to analyze the ways in which Cuban filmmakers see their reality and current society in front of the cameras and behind the lens with a critical eye, in pursuit of equity.

According to its organizers, the show not only led to a meeting between filmmakers, it also brought together photographers, editors, and other specialists in the sector, whose contribution is significant for the complex cinematographic framework.

The event demonstrated the government's efforts to strengthen the preparation of women who graduate in any field related to cinema.

Meanwhile, it addressed the creative universe of Sara Gómez, the only woman who managed to direct a fiction feature film in Cuba during the first 40 years of Icaic.

The debate on the role of women in each of the spaces was joined by recognized voices on the island such as Rebeca Chávez, Marilyn Solaya, Lilian Morales, Carla Valdés, Belkis Vega and Lizette Vila, who are committed to an inclusive and democratic vision in the scope of the seventh art.

It highlighted the cancellation of a commemorative stamp for non-violence against women and girls, by the Vice Prime Minister of the Republic Inés María Chapman and the Secretary General of the Federation of Cuban Women, Teresa Amarelle.

As the first action of the gender committee, the contest gave access to more than 40 audiovisuals including fiction feature films, shorts, documentaries and animated films distributed in the different venues of the event, which exceeded the number of 70 participants and will extend its scope with screenings in the network of cinemas in the country.
