Felix Varela is born.

He was one of the most outstanding figures in Cuba at the beginning of the XIX century. José de la Luz y Caballero, one of the students, when highlighting his work, said that he was the first to teach us to think. Varela supported the separation of Cuba from Spain, the fight for independence and the abolition of slavery, as well as the radical modernization of teaching in the country. Even though he was a priest, his philosophy and pedagogy were openly against scholasticism. His works and publications were highly influential in the generations of his time and after.  He was great in his teaching and it has been affirmed that he taught us to think. He removed the roots of scholasticism and stated some morality concepts of great meaning. He died in Florida, United States, on February25th, 1853.
