Flu vaccination campaign began in Cuba

Cuban pediatric population from 11 months and 29 days of life to 6 years of age will be vaccinated from this Monday until, in order to prevent complications related to stationary influenza of the south hemisphere.

Two doses will be applied to this group with a time lapse of 4 weeks in between in a campaign designed to be extended till next December. Pregnant, asthmatic and diabetic women between 19 and 24 years of age will be included, according to what was informed by the Ministry of Health in a press note.

After that, adult population over 85 years of age, people admitted in care facilities for the elderly, psycho-pedagogic centers and nursing homes will also be vaccinated.

Poultry and livestock workers at high risks of exposure to influenza will be included to the vaccination.

Among the prioritized are patients with chronic renal insufficiency, patients over six years of age with infantile cerebral paralysis and cystic fibrosis, chronic psychiatric patients, and workers of care services for patients with severe acute respiratory infections.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus, that infects the nose, throat and lungs, causing from mil, to severe and even fatal events.

Cuba has also been immunizing against Poliomyelitis in an annual campaign since 1962, becoming the first country in Latin America to be free of this infectious disease that affects the central nervous system.

The national immunization program includes vaccination against 13 diseases, and eight of the products used in this campaign are developed and produced in this Caribbean island.
