Cuban National Capitol, awarded with Gubbio Prize

The Capitol exhibits an undeniable beauty, serene and majestic, of pure and severely classical lines, of admirable proportions where horizontality of its façade contrasts with the elegant slenderness of its dome.

The restoration of this building, led by the Historian of Havana, Eusebio Leal Spengler, together with a multidisciplinary group of heritage experts, was awarded with the first mention in the Gubbio Prize 2021, in the Latin America and the Caribbean section.

This edition of the competition was convened with the aim of promoting concrete progress in the guidelines and criteria for intervention on the existing built heritage, the re-qualification of urban and territorial areas and the management of intangible cultural heritage.

The evaluation of the projects took into account aspects such as innovation, compatible re-use, valorization of buildings and historic urban and territorial contexts, in the sense of strengthening the union of the historic-urban landscape and the management of the intangible cultural heritage.

Inspired by the name of the Italian city of Gubbio, an ancient city in the region of Umbria in the province of Perugia, the Award, instituted in the 1990s by the National Association of Historic-Artistic Centers(ANCSA)in Italy, was granted in the 2021 edition to the Office of the Historian of Havana for the revitalization of the Avenida del Puerto.
