Cumeric, a new natural product developed by Cuban Science could enter the Covid-19 prevention scenario.

The first population intervention in Cuba with the natural product Cumeric, with proven antibacterial action, began to be administered to suspicious patients and those who are contacts of positive patients to Covid-19 in five areas of the city of Ciego de Ávila.

Previously authorized by the Innovation Committee of the Ministry of Public Health, its use will be gradually extended to Florencia, Chambas and Ciro Redondo in order to measure its effectiveness, informed Tania Valdés González, head of the Laboratorio de Teragnóstico and the National Projects for the Development of Curcuma Ionga products (Laboratorio de Teragnóstico y de los Proyectos Nacionales de Desarrollo de Productos de Cúrcuma Ionga).

The specialist commented that the compound has Curcuma Ionga extract and high technology is used to determine its beneficial properties, while laboratory and clinical trials have proven that it is safe, and shows anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects against bovine coronavirus which is of the same subgenus of SAR-COV 2.

In the first months of confronting the pandemic, more than 90 workers, in the vulnerable areas of the Calixto García Surgical Clinical Hospital, used it and showed fewer infection rate than those who did not use it.

Cumeric is used orally and nasally. It was previously subjected to observational clinical studies in which 800 individuals from the Havana municipalities of Regla and Plaza de la Revolución participated. It is approved for sale in the Natural and Homeopathic pharmacies in these areas.

As part of the research led by the team of the Calixto García Surgical Clinic Hospital in conjunction with the Center for Technological Applications and Nuclear Development (CEADEN, Centro de Aplicaciones Tecnológicas y Desarrollo Nuclear), it was informed that Cúrcuma Ionga supplements lower glycaemia, cholesterol and triglycerides in patients with diabetes and dyslipidemia.
