Ruth de la Torriente Brau passed away.

She was a teacher by profession who dedicated most of her life to take care of the legacy of her brother, Pablo, who fought and died in Spain giving his internationalist contribution in the defense of the Spanish Republic. Ruth was a faithful collaborator of the Pablo de la Torriente Cultural Center based in Old Havana. She gave several conferences spreading in Cuba and other countries the life and work of the hero of Majadahonda. He traveled several times to Spain, where he participated in homage days to Pablo de la Torriente Brau and of remembrance to the antifascist fighters of the Spanish Republic.

Pablo de la Torriente Cultural Center

It is an independent, non-profit cultural institution, created under the auspices of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba. It was formally constituted in mid-1996. When it was founded, it had an Advisory Committee made up of relevant public figures and outstanding professionals. In addition to the Circle of Friends who offer their support and backing to the projects carried out at the Center, it has a Sponsoring Board made up of several Cuban institutions and social organizations. Its headquarters are located at 63 Muralla Street, between Oficios and Inquisidor, Habana Vieja.

Majadahonda

It is a Spanish city and municipality belonging to the community of Madrid. Originally the territory was a farming and grazing area. During the Spanish Civil War in the years of the thirties in the twentieth century was the scene of heavy fighting. The origin of the town of Majadahonda dates back to a small village of shepherds and farmers. From this origin comes its name, Majada-honda: a shepherds' sheepfold located in a hollow.

 

Pablo de la Torriente Brau

He was born in Puerto Rico on December 12, 1901. Shortly thereafter he moved to Cuba with his parents. From 1930 onwards he developed his formidable career as a journalist and writer, while actively participating in social and political struggles. In Cuba he was a front line fighter and was always seen in the vanguard of the struggle of the student revolutionary movement and later in the advance for the demands of the working class and the people in general. In the years of the decade in the twentieth century he traveled to Spain, first as a journalist and later as an internationalist fighter he gave his contribution to the defenders of the Republic during the Spanish Civil War. His fall occurred on the hill of Majadahonda, Spain, on December 19, 1936.
