Last Friday morning the immunization of students of the final grades of pre-university, technical and teachers training schools with the Abdala vaccine began in Havana, which will cover 14 400 adolescents in 57 health centers.

The initial act took place at the Fulgencio Oroz Gómez pedagogical school, located in the municipality of Cerro, where the application of the inmunogen to 108 students living in that municipality began in the presence of the Minister of Education, Ena Elsa Velázquez, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar, the Governor of Havana, Reinaldo García Zapata and the provincial director of Education Yoania Falcón Suárez.

The leaders had a lively chat with the youngsters who were waiting for the check-up prior the injection of the vaccine, who expressed their joy for this event that will allow them to re-incorporate to the teaching process with a higher protection in the first half of October, once the immunization scheme is completed.

Dr. Ileana Morales Suárez, Director of Science and Technological Innovation of the Ministry of Public Health, explained to students the elements that support the effectiveness of the vaccine, which has had an impact on the reduction of confirmed cases and of serious and critical patients in the provinces where it application has been extended.

The Minister of Education reaffirmed the priority given by the country’s top management to the care of the children, adolescent and young people, as shown in the vaccination campaign started this Friday that will be extended next Sunday to the 12 to 18 years of age group and will continue on September 15 with children from 2 to 11 years old, who will be vaccinated with the Soberana 02 vaccine candidate.

Torrez Iríbar told the young people the main moments lived during the beginning of this battle against Covid -19 initiated in March 2020 in which the heroes in white coats, the political and mass organizations and the structures of the People’s Power have played a leading role with the permanent collaboration of the population in a gigantic effort headed by the highest leadership of the country.

The delegation then toured the rooms destined for the vaccination and subsequent observation of the students, equipped with the necessary elements and medical and nursing personnel who were trained for this task.

The first subject to receive the Abdala dose was the fourth years student Emilio González Castro who expressed his confidence in this drug, which will allow him to joy the teaching process in order to finish his studied and become an elementary school teacher.

The immunization of the population of the capital between 2 and 18 years of age should conclude on November 15th, with the vaccination of the convalescent minors of Covid 19, pending for a later date.
