Repair of Central Railroad Station in Havana progresses

It was explained that the expansion will involve an intervention with a different architectural approach, since there is such integration of the building, but rather a new building that solves the space problem of the old buildings.

The repair of the Central Railroad Station seeks to rescue the building heritage values, mainly in the façade and plasterwork, in addition to providing it with technology that supports the railroad’s investment plan until 2030.

According to what the engineer Jorge Candelaria Barroso told Gramma newspaper, that in the 60’s and the 80’s of the last century, some repairs were made to the Railroad Station but none as significant and important as the one that is being carried out at the moment.

Candelaria Barroso estimated that the passengers circulation will oscillate among the 16 000 people and even though the station  cannot handle this amount of traffic by its own architectural features, an expansion process of its areas is being executed with the annexation of a facility destined to the waiting process before boarding.

He explained that the expansion will involve an intervention with a different architectural approach, since there is no such integration of the building, but rather a new building that solves the space problem of the old building.

According to the newspaper, the capital’s Railroad Station has already reinforced the two original towers of the building with a metal structure to support them, the structural elements have been restored, the roof have been waterproofed and more than 90% of the façade and decorative elements have been worked on.

About the integration of new technologies to the facility, the head of Esedip explained that the project to equip the platforms with solar panels, which in turn will contribute their share of electricity saving to the country’s energy network, is in the project phase.
