When he was only seventeen years old, he began to work as editor of the newspaper La Prensa de La Habana, where he published his first verses. His journalistic work expanded as he wrote chronicles, literary reviews and various articles. He worked as an English teacher at the El Salvador School, directed by the eminent Cuban pedagogue José de la Luz y Caballero. In prison he wrote 16 compositions that were posthumously collected under the title Diario de un mártir (Diary of a Martyr).
