Neurosciences’ Center increases the production of devices for the fight against Covid -19

Among its products are CY02 connectors for breathing circuits, pulmonary ventilators, sanitary swabs and masks, oral and hearing prostheses and other devices made using different types of 3D printers and metal.

The Centro de Neurociencias de Cuba (CNEURO) (Neuroscience’s Center of Cuba), in Havana, increased the production of connector for breathing circuits (device with Y form), seeking the goal of producing a thousands of these devices in response to the demand of the country before the medicinal oxygen deficit.

Yanet Garriga Pereira, head of Advanced Technologies and Design of the institution, explained to the press that by engaging 3D printers in the process this kind of production can be obtained. That is something that has been done since 2020 and during the present year it was possible to get a partial delivery of this products.

However, the production of this products was increased in respond to a request made by the National Center of Electro-medicine (Centro Nacional de Electromedicina) due to a breakage in the main medicinal oxygen production plant in the country and the need to use a single oxygen tank in the treatment of two Covid-19 patients at the same time. Under this aim, this CY02 device is used and is also part of the internal connections of breathing equipment.

That is the reason why hundreds of filters and devices has been elaborated to be part of the assisted ventilation circuit to Covid-19 patients, and new parts have been added as replacements for the damaged ones in machinery of the Biotechnological Industry, Pharmaceutical of Cuba and other institutions.

This solution has allowed to gain autonomy in the no-importation of components, which is limited due to the commercial, financial and economic blockade imposed by the United States and the high demand of this devices at international levels.

In the same way, Garriga Pereira mentioned that CNEURO has delivered to the Health System a 180 pulmonary ventilators of a production of 250, for which work is still on. Thanks to the acquisition of new technologies sanitary swabs and masks production is possible.

Likewise, Automatic Engineering Yaíma Contino Matos, head of the Production Organization Department of the center, said that oral and hearing prosthetics are also developed, in a personalized way, even though its production has been restricted due to the pandemic.

The specialist pointed out that these products can be obtained thanks to different kinds of 3D printers and metal after a conceptualizing process, digital design and the data result which is carried out to 3D printers for the manufacturing of the product.

This technologies ‘leverage is that there is no need for a specific model or more complex machinery; a feasible result can be obtained from just an idea put into practice, she highlighted.
