Tropical Storm Elsa in the Straits of Florida

Over the next 12 to 24 hours tropical storm Elsa will continue heading to northwestward and will turn northward during the afternoon today, keeping a similar speed of translation.

Early this morning, Tropical storm Elsa continued to move north-northwestward over the Florida Straits at about 12 miles per hour. Its cloudy areas, with showers and heavy rains continue to affect Matanzas, Mayabeque and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud.

In Cárdenas, Matanzas, heavy rains have been reported since yesterday afternoon with a total of 210 millimeters, of which 125 millimeters in the last 3 hours. The most important accumulations between 8:00 p.m. last night and 5a.m. today were reported in the province of Matanzas: 170 millimeters in Union de Reyes, 112 millimeters in Jovellanos, 82 millimeters Varadero and 112 millimeters in Indio Hatuey. In Mayabeque: 104 millimeters in Bainoa and 103 millimeters in Tapaste. In Isla de la Juventud: 86 millimeters in Punta del Este.

The Casablanca weather station in Havana reports sustained winds of 40 km per hour with guts close to 60 km per hour, the strongest at 2:25 pm this morning with 62 km per hour.

At 6:00 a.m. this morning, the central region of Tropical Storm Elsa was estimated at 24.3 degrees north latitude and 82.5 degrees west longitude, a position that places it 125 km north of Havana and 75 km west-southwest from Key West. Maximum sustained winds are 95 km per hour with higher guts and the central pressure is 1007 hPa.

Elsa will continue its gradual strengthening over the Florida Straits and the Gulf of Mexico.

Clouds and winds associated with Elsa’s feeding bands will continue to affect the provinces from Pinar del Rio to Cienfuegos and Villa Clara, including the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud, which may be strong and intense in some locations.

Sustained winds will blow between 30 and 45 km per hour from Artemisa to Matanzas, mainly in the area of the north coast, with possible guts reaching tropical storm force in the northern coast of Matanzas, Mayabeque and Havana, of more than 65 km per hour. The strength of the winds will gradually diminish with the advance of Elsa towards the Gulf of Mexico.

On the north western coast, there will be strong storm surges with light coastal flooding since early morning in low lying areas of the coast, which will diminish by late morning.

The next tropical cyclone warning will be broadcasted at 6:00 pm today, Tuesday.
