Adolfo Alfonso was born in the town of Melena del Sur, then Havana province.

In his artistic work he was considered one of the best repentistas that Cuba has ever had. It was in 1939, at the CMBF radio station, when he officially began his career as a decímista. Some time later, he began to work at Mil Diez radio station, in a program sponsored by the cigar company Partagás.From that moment on, the radio became a medium for his dissemination. When the legendary and current program Palms and Reeds was founded, he actively participated with several singers, among others Justo Vega, who was his partner in controversies and his eternal friend.

Located in the southern part of the current province of Mayabeque, Melena del Sur is a municipality with an area of 226.5 square kilometers. This territory has the great historical merit of having been the first to be declared free of illiteracy in 1961.

Palms and Reeds

It is a program of the Cuban Television that includes the different expressions of the peasant music, - décimas, improvisations, seguidillas, tonadas, controversias and punto cubano - It is also known as the Cuban guateque. Its first broadcast took place on October 19, 1962. This peasant guateque is one of the oldest programs on Cuban television. It is broadcasted every Sunday between 7:00 and 8:00 pm.

Justo Vega

He was born in the city of Matanzas on August 9, 1909. In his artistic work he was an extraordinary interpreter of the Cuban "punto cubano". For a period of many years he cultivated and embellished the tenth guajira. His songs were always directed to love, nature and the homeland. He was among the founders of the television program Palmas y Cañas. In Cuba he was known as El Caballero de la Décima.
