He started in theater when he was only 15 years old and was part of Nicolás Rodríguez's Spanish company. He played comic and tragic characters in operettas, zarzuelas, dramas and other genres.

He appeared in cinema, radio and television. It was in the latter media that he began to play the character of Cholito.

In addition to his work as an artist, he was a combatant in the clandestine struggle and founder of the National Revolutionary Militias. He actively participated in the realization of various tasks in the country.

Following a call made by Fidel in a speech he gave in Havana on October 26, 1959, militias began to be created and many men and women of the people were trained to guarantee the strengthening of the defense of the Revolution in the face of threats of military aggression from the United States and the actions of terrorist elements in the country.
