The outstanding Cuban musicologist and instrumentalist Odilio Urfé dies in Havana.

Son of the famous musician José Urfé, he turned out to be a child prodigy since he played as a percussionist in the municipal band of the town of Madruga. Later he learned to play the violin, the flute and the piano. He did commendable work in the field of Cuban music research. He also participated as a juror in national and international musical events and, in addition, he was General Director of Music of the National Council of Culture.

José Urfé occupies a significant place in the history of Cuban popular music for having been a notable musician and composer. In addition to composing a large number of creations, including many danzones, he excelled as a clarinetist, orchestra conductor and teacher.

National Council of Culture

 

The National Council of Culture was the governing body of the cultural policy of the Cuban Revolution from its foundation in January 1961 until the creation of the Ministry of Culture, which assumed its functions in 1976. Its main objective was to carry out a broad and deep cultural policy aimed at all social strata of the population and, especially, at the popular sectors.
