In Havana, 618 COVID-19 cases have been identified out of the 1 221 new positive cases confirmed in Cuba

Dr. Francisco Durán, national director of Epidemiology for the Ministry of Public Health, informed in a press conference that by the end of yesterday, May 22nd, 1 221 cases were confirmed as positive to COVID-19, for a total 133 053.

To date, 877 deceased were reported (14 within the day), 1216 patients were discharged (within the day), 6 893 (5.2%) were confirmed, of which 6 884 (97.9%) have a clinically stable course, and we arrive to 125 236 (94.1%) people medically and epidemiologically discharged. There are 48 patients in a critical state and 93 in a serious one.

Of those diagnosed, 618 belong to the capital. Of that amount, 610 were autochthonous and 8 were imported. Due to the increase in the case amount, the presence, dispersion, and rising tendency in all municipalities, the province will continue to be in the epidemiological phase know as Limited Local Transmission Stage, also having the highest incidence rate which is 445% during the last 15 days. This Saturday, nine residents of the capital passed away, and Havana presents a 7.2% positivity in the PCR tests done, which makes this province the third with the highest rate in the country, it also has the highest rate of pediatric cases reported: 106, four of them below one year of age.    

The 35.88% (8243) of the PCR tests done this Saturday took place in the capital, a territory that reported a 7.6% (630) of positive cases (The third in the country), and four of the eight deceased.

The most affected municipalities in the capital were: Boyeros (67), Centro Habana (58), San Miguel del Padrón (56), Marianao (54), Guanabacoa (48), Arroyo Naranjo (47), Lisa (45), Cerro (40), Diez de Octubre (39), Habana del Este (38), Plaza de la Revolución (34), Playa (27), Cotorro (26), Regla (21), and Habana Vieja (17).

Durán informed that 9 of the 15 municipalities in Havana contain the 47.1% of the COVID-19 incidence rate in the country, in the last 15 days. These are: Regla, San Miguel del Padrón, Guanabacoa, Boyeros, Cerro, Centro Habana, Marianao, Arroyo Naranjo and Habana Vieja.

The other confirmed cases belong to other provinces like: Mayabeque (81), Matanzas (73), Santiago de Cuba (69), Camagüey (66), Cienfuegos (59), Pinar del Río y Ciego de Ávila (49), Artemisa (40), Holguín (33), Granma (26), Sancti Spíritus (24), Villa Clara and Las Tunas (12 each), Guantánamo (9), and the Isle Youth (1).

For the COVID-19, 22 430 samples were analyzed, and 1 221 were positive. The country has had a total of 4 150 241 samples analyzed, and 133 053 (3.21%) of these were positive.

1 119 (92.5%) out of the total of confirmed cases were contacts of other confirmed ones, for a total of 125 807 since the beginning of the pandemic which represents the 94.5%; 42 (3.5%) being infected abroad, for a total of 6 991 (5.3%) being infected abroad; and 49 (4%) with a undetermined source of infection.

This Saturday’s autochthonous cases were a total 1 178, and 43 were imported. A total of 625 (51.2%) of these were female and 596 (48.8%) were male.

A total of 28 817 patients are kept under clinical and epidemiological surveillance, 4 377 are under suspicion, 17 556 are under surveillance, and 6 884 (5.1%) have been confirmed, of which 6 743 (97.9%) have a stable clinical course.

The 45.6% (557) of the 1 221 positive cases where asymptomatic, for a total of 65 265, which represents the 49% of the confirmed cases to date.  

The 1 221 diagnosed belong to the following age groups: 202 below the age of 20 years old; 391 between 20 and 39 years old; 415 between 40 and 59 years old, and 213 above 60 years old. 

COVID-19 fatality rate in Cuba, until May 22nd, is 0.66% per one million inhabitants, lower than that of the whole world (2.08%) and the one of the American continent (2.44%).
