Roberto Friol is born in Havana

He taught methodological lessons to a large group of high-school students who would later participate in the Literacy Campaign. He worked as literature researcher in the José Martí National Library and was an advisor to the Library’s Department of Technical Processes.He wrote important works such as his essay "El hombre de Saúl Bellow", published in Revista de la National Library José Martí and “Suite for Juan Francisco Manzano”, published by Arte y Literature.

The Library started on October 18, 1901, in a room at the Real Potency Castle. The Library’s first director was Domingo Figarola Caneda. It currently has a large, varied and rich bibliographic fund, made of books published in Cuba and the world. It is the largest library in Cuba and it is located in a building at the “José Martí” Revolution Square.
